TransCanada said the 1,661-mile (2,673-kilometer) project would carry 700,000 barrels of crude a day from Alberta’s oil sands to refineries along the Gulf of Mexico, crossing six U.S. states and creating 20,000 jobs.
“I’m disappointed that Republicans in Congress forced this decision, but it does not change my administration’s commitment to American-made energy,” Obama said in a statement. “We will continue to look for new ways to partner with the oil and gas industry to increase our energy security.”
This President has made it plain that he favors higher oil and gas prices in a misguided effort to create an artificial market for "environmentally friendly" energy sources.
This pipeline decision is consistent with his anti-capitalism ideology and his goal of a government controlled economy. Unfortunately it is not consistent with increasing employment and building a healthy economy.
Oil price has risen from about $3 per barrel to over $100 per barrel in 50 years.
Canada is self sufficient in oil and a large producer. US can also produce more of the oil it needs, coal, natural gas and should relax some of its drilling restraints due to the dire current economy.
The Canada to Texas pipeline won't hurt the environment more than a typical highway, and should be built. Instead, if Canada has to build pipelines to the Oceans to put oil onto tankers that would hurt the environment in the same way.

The U.S. must move away from buying oil from abusive dictatorships and theocracies.
We need energy independence and until alternative sources are viable, oil is still our first and real option.
I would rather buy oil from the Canadians and create jobs in the U.S than continue to fund the human rights abuses of the Middle East.
Oil and natural gas pipelines criss-cross this country already. Mr. President name one pipeline related accident that resulted in contaminated drinking water in the past 50 years?.
The time has to come to deal with hostage takers sheiks of the Middle East.
Energy independence in the only way that has a chance of stopping their behavior.
Under President Obama leadership U.S. will continue to purchase overpriced oil from the robber baron sheiks of the Middle East, who will use that money to continue to fund terrorism.
Obama has been lying for 3 years now that his first priority is job creation.
Here he has at least 20,000 actual shovel-ready jobs right there before him, but he is cowed by his big green financiers into scuttling the project.
In truth, job creation is not even in Obama's top ten priorities.
President Obama has to finish up his failing pet social engineering projects first and then, if there's time, he will see what he do about jobs.
Apparently the only jobs the president likes are those that are sponsored by union organizations licking his boots.
President Obama has absolutely no idea how to fix our economy.
